Cinema Rediscovered: La Grande Bouffe

Director
Marco Ferreri
Certificate
18
Running Time
132 mins

Four giants of early 70s French and Italian cinema (Marcello Mastroianni, Ugo Tognazzi, Michel Piccoli and Philippe Noiret) gather at a secluded villa to scoff themselves to death in Marco Ferreri‘s Bunuellian satire on gluttony that sticks it to our old foes, those bastard consumerist bourgeoisie. Not everyone was amused by this. “Ferreri uses shock tactics and excremental schoolboy humour to make a wearisome, excessive movie about excess”, sniffed one reviewer, who was forced to concede: “It did no harm at the box office though”.

This Cinema Rediscovered screening is – surprise! – part of the Gluttony, Decadence and Resistance programme.
