Lonely, middle-aged widow Kath (Beryl Reid) meets hunky stud Mr. Sloane (Peter McEnery) and lures him into her home as her lodger. She then wastes no time in seducing the young fella. All is well until her closeted gay brother Ed (Harry Andrews) pitches up and also takes an immediate shine to the muscle-bound lunk.
Orton’s blackly comic 1964 play is opened out slightly by Clive Exton‘s script, but the main pleasure to be had here is in the performances, particularly by Andrews and the great Beryl Reid. This new restoration is on screen in the Celebrating Orton strand of Cinema Rediscovered marking the 50th anniversary of both the playwright’s death and the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality.
