The Mighty Boosh‘s Julian Barratt co-writes and stars in this suitably self-aware comedy with more than a whiff of Partridge about it, which is underlined by the casting of Steve Coogan in a minor role. Barratt plays washed-up actor Richard Thorncroft, who was once the star of the oh-so-1980s TV cop show Mindhorn. This followed the adventures of the eponymous rozzer who underwent a bionic experiment in which his left eye was removed and replaced with an eyepatch scanner that allowed him to literally see through the lies of wrong ‘uns. But it all went pear-shaped after the series was cancelled and tubby Thorncroft now lives alone in a London bedsit with his memories, hairpiece and vast collection of Mindhorn memorabilia.
But now he’s got a shot at a most unusual comeback and possible redemption. A bonkers serial killer is roaming the Isle of Man. Seemingly convinced that Mindhorn is a real detective, he’s announced that he will only negotiate with the man in the all-seeing eyepatch.
