Smiles of a Summer Night

Director
Ingmar Bergman
Certificate
PG
Running Time
109 mins

It’s Ingmar Bergman’s breakthrough film and the one that inspired Woody Allen’s A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy. A middle-aged lawyer, his virgin bride and her stepson are invited to a country mansion for a summer weekend, during which all manner of partner swapping occurs. It’s all about exposing the pretensions of the early 20th century haute bourgeois, y’see.

It’s back on screen in the Watershed’s Celebrating Ingmar Bergman season marking the centenary of the great Swedish director’s birth.
