Bristolians won’t need reminding about The Room – aka “the worst film ever made” – as this great 2003 disasterpiece is regularly screened to sell-out audiences by the Bristol Bad Film Club. Director and star Tommy Wiseau is also a frequent attendee at these events, as is his co-star Greg Sestero. Four years ago, Sestero wrote a book about his experiences, The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made.
Inevitably, this itself has now been made into a movie – a film buff’s Florence Foster Jenkins, if you will. And it’s every bit as entertaining as we dared hope. Dave Franco plays Sestero – a struggling young actor who meets and becomes fascinated by the eccentric and mysterious Wiseau (James Franco) at an acting class. Following multiple industry rejections, they team up to produce The Room. But Sestero soon begins to realise just how much he has over-estimated his peculiar chum’s talents. Warm, affectionate and very funny, The Disaster Artist also marks something of a career upswing for its director and star James Franco. Go here for more on the film’s Bristol connections.
