Teen metalhead Wayne (Mike Myers) runs his own smalltown public access cable TV show with his nerdy sidekick Garth (Dana Carvey). Slimy network sphincter Benjamin Oliver (Rob Lowe) buys up the show and connives to totally ruin it just to kiss ass with some flaky sponsor. This alone is enough to make Wayne and Garth hurl chunks. But then sleazy Benjamin starts to move in on Wayne’s chick, the babelicious Cassandra (Tia Carrere). That’s the plot in its entirety. Director Penelope Spheeris is content for Myers and Carvey to import their popular ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketch formula to create a consistently hilarious sequence of sketches and gags upon which the feeble storyline is rarely permitted to intrude. Classic moments include the oft-screened Bohemian Rhapsody sequence, the Alice Cooper “We’re not worthy!” cameo, and Garth’s side-splitting Foxy Lady dance. If you’re determined to seek meaning in all of this, Wayne’s World catches perfectly the cheerfully nihilistic generation for whom the only reality is that which is filtered through popular culture: witness Garth’s musings on whether Bugs Bunny was arousing when he put on a dress and became Girl Bunny. Your best bet, however, is to leave analysis to the sphincters and party on.
This screening is part of the three-day Dinema (dining, cinema, geddit?) event at the Memorial Stadium. Food and drink will be available from a street food area, featuring stalls from the Bristol Beer Factory, Flipside Cocktail Club and other local independent establishments. Access to this area, which will host live music from the likes of DJ Cheeba, is free. See the Dinema Facebook page for more information. Advance tickets for the screening are available here.
