Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story

Director
Alexandra Dean
Certificate
12A
Running Time
90 mins

Few people can put ‘screen siren’ and ‘inventor’ on their CV. Now 1940s trailblazer Hedy Lamarr gets her due with this new documentary, which celebrates this Austrian-Jewish emigre’s beauty, star power and brains. Yup, Ms. Lamarr came up with a covert communication system to try and help defeat the Nazis, but the US Navy told her not to worry her pretty little head about such things when she gave them the patent. Today, her concept is used as the basis for secure WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth.

Among the film’s contributors is Mel Brooks, who paid idiosyncratic tribute to his old chum with Harvey Korman’s character Hedley Lamarr in Blazing Saddles.
