Rocky Road to Dublin

Director
Peter Lennon
Certificate
12A
Running Time
99 mins

Peter Lennon’s long-suppressed 1968 documentary, which was banned for more than three decades in Ireland after just one screening. What’s more, it took until 2005 for the film to be shown in Bristol, when it was premiered at the Arnolfini.

It’s a sustained critique of church and state, which exposes, in Lennon’s words, “the plight of a community which survived nearly 700 years of English occupation and then nearly sank under the weight of its own heroes and clergy.” The Rocky Road to Dublin is back on screen in the Watershed’s May ’68: Film and the Revolution season.
