The Final Year

Director
Greg Barker
Certificate
12A
Running Time
90 mins

A treat for those who are nostalgic for a time when there wasn’t an, ahem, very stable genius in the White House, Greg Barker‘s brisk documentary takes a fly-on-the-wall approach to Obama’s last year in office.

It’s an admiring portrait clearly aimed at a left/liberal audience eager to applaud Obama’s legacy, but the real appeal is the smug assumption throughout that Hilary Clinton will be handed the keys to the White House. When this fails to happen, Barker’s film takes off in a dramatic and unexpected direction. The cameras keep rolling as shock and disbelief set in. Enter President Trump to the strains of The Times They Are A-Changin’. It’s like House of Cards with idiocy in place of Machiavellian scheming.
