The Somme 1916: From Both Sides of the Wire + intro

This excellent, scrupulously researched BBC2 series was produced as part of the Beeb’s commemoration of the Battle of the Somme and explores many of the myths that have arisen over the last 100 years. In particular, the final programme, End Game, challenges the claim that the Somme campaign was a ‘decisive victory’ and reveals striking differences in military culture – notably the fact that the British executed more than ten times as many deserters as the Germans.

This screening is presented by the Bristol Radical History Group and will be introduced by the series’ distinguished executive producer, Michael Poole, who recently retired from the BBC.
