Rather like Ruth Bader Ginsberg, celebrated war correspondent Marie Colvin’s status as a prominent woman working in a very male environment has resulted in both a documentary and a biopic. The former, Under the Wire, had a rather limited cinema release. But this drama, with Rosamund Pike strapping on that distinctive eyepatch, is guaranteed more attention.
Based on a Vanity Fair article by Marie Brenner and directed by documentarian Matthew Heinemann, A Private War has attracted praise both for Pike’s performance and for its resistance of the hagiographic impulse, being unafraid to explore the darker, destructive side of subject’s character. This preview screening is followed by a satellite Q&A with Rosamund Pike, Jamie Dornan, director Matthew Heineman and guests.
