After the Storm

Director
Hirokazu Kore-eda
Certificate
PG
Running Time
118 mins

Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s follow-up to the much-lauded Our Little Sister is another subtle exploration of the complexities of family life.

It’s the lightly comic tale of blocked novelist Ryoto, who’s separated from his wife and unable to pay child support because of his massive gambling habit. So he takes a job with a private detective agency, digging the dirt on cheating spouses, which feeds the growing realisation that his own life is a failure. It’s all expertly performed by a great ensemble cast, but veteran Kirin Kiki steals it as Ryoto’s wisecracking mum.

It’s back on screen to conclude the Watershed’s comprehensive Of Flesh & Blood: The Cinema of Hirokazu Kore-eda season.
