John Schlesinger‘s sixties working class classic scripted by Keith Waterhouse from his own novel, with Tom Courtenay delivering a career-making performance as the eponymous Walter Mitty-ish dreamer who retreats from his dull job as an undertaker’s assistant into a rich fantasy world, fuelled by his prodigious talent for telling porkies. In one of her earliest screen roles, Julie Christie is equally magnificent as an adventurous young woman who’s so charmed by Billy that she’s prepared to overlook his many faults.
