Cinema Rediscovered: Fruit of Paradise

Director
Vera Chytilová
Certificate
12A
Running Time
99 mins

Transgressive Czech new waver Vera Chytilová followed her fabulous anarchic comedy Daisies with this 1970 retelling of the Adam and Eve yarn as a subversive, experimental allegory of the invasion of Prague by Soviet forces under the Warsaw pact in 1968. Once again, the commie authorities were most displeased and banned her from making another film until 1975.

It’s back on screen in the Gluttony, Decadence and Resistance programme of Cinema Rediscovered with an introduction by So Mayer, author of Political Animals: The New Feminist Cinema.
