Cinema Rediscovered: Saraband for Dead Lovers

Director
Basil Dearden
Certificate
U
Running Time
96 mins

Largely forgotten today, Basil Deardon‘s lavish costume drama was Ealing’s very first Technicolor feature film (shot by the great Douglas Slocombe) and also one of the studio’s most expensive productions. It’s the tale of a claim to the Hanovarian throne of England, with Joan Greenwod giving it the full flounce as the wife of the future George I, who unwisely gets the hots for hunky Swedish count Stewart Granger.

It’s screened in the Slocombe at Ealing strand of Cinema Rediscovered, with an introduction by Professor Sarah Street.
