Howards End + intro

Director
James Ivory
Certificate
PG
Running Time
142 mins

A 25th anniversary 4K restoration of one of the best of the Merchant-Ivory flicks. Regular collaborator Ruth Prawer Jhabvala‘s complex yet lucid two-and-a-half hour Oscar-winning adaptation of the E.M. Forster novel revolves around the tangled relationship between the unconventional, middle-class Schlegels and the wealthier, more conservative Wilcoxes.

Howards End is the family seat owned by Ruth Wilcox (Vanessa Redgrave), ailing wife of Henry (Anthony Hopkins), whose dying wish is that it should pass to Margaret Schlegel (Emma Thompson, who bagged the 1993 Oscar for Best Actress), with whom she has lately formed an enigmatic friendship. The Watershed’s preview screening is presented as part of Cinema Rediscovered. It’ll be introduced by the film’s Oscar-winning set director, Ian Whittaker.
