The Jebus story updated as a rock opera for the groovy hippy generation by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice proved a huge stage hit.

Co-written by Melvyn Bragg, Norman Jewison‘s 1973 film version bagged the late Andrew Preview (Morcambe and Wise gag now mandatory) an Oscar nomination for his musical direction but was rather less successful. Ted Neeley‘s performance as Jesus was described by one reviewer as “more whiny than heroic”. And it’s a safe bet that if this was being cast today a black man (Carl Anderson) would not be selected to play Judas.
