The biggest blockbuster of 1927, Cecil B. DeMille‘s grand, lavish and pleasingly saucy Biblical epic benefits from extraordinary sets and a cast of thousands. Now sure, this is a preachy and – to modern eyes – rather camp tale of the Passion of Christ, which might seem a tad off-putting. But there’s plenty of shameful sin and debauchery to enjoy before that party-pooping Jesus fella turns up to put a stop to such pleasures, as heavy-hearted Mr. DeMille found it regrettably necessary to depict the kind of decadence that needed to be stamped out. Watch out in particular for Jacqueline Logan‘s scantily-clad temptress Mary Magdalene.
This South West Silents screening in the apt surroundings of Bristol Cathedral is the UK premiere of French silent film specialists Lobster Films’ 4K two-colour Technicolor restoration, which looks stunning on the big screen. It’s shown with live organ improvisation from David Bednall. Go here for further information and ticket details.
