Le Mépris

Director
Jean-Luc Godard
Certificate

Running Time
103 mins

Jean-Luc Godard‘s self-reflexive new wave masterpiece: a portrait of the breakdown of a marriage and a playful satire on international film-making, beautifully shot in Cinemascope. Brigitte Bardot plays a young wife who becomes increasingly contemptuous of her husband (Michel Piccoli) – a script doctor consumed by self-doubt as he works on Fritz Lang’s adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey. Jack Palance is also on fine form as the vulgar American producer who just wants more mermaids.

It’s back on screen in the Watershed’s Sunday brunch Blood + Homage: The Cinematic Obsessions of Yann Gonzalez season.
