Moulin Rouge

Not the glitzy Baz Luhrmann flick but E.A. Dupont‘s lavish 1928 drama in which a young aristocrat driven to a suicide attempt after falling in love with a young dancer and her elegant, ravishingly beautiful mother. That’s right: the pioneering expressionist’s first British production is a fabulously art designed silent movie set in and around the dancehalls of Paris.

Worry not, however, as this South West Silents screening includes live piano accompaniment by John Sweeney. It’s part of a series of collabroative events by South West Silents, Bristol Festival of Ideas, Cube Cinema, Curzon Cinema and the Watershed celebrating the films of the Weimar Republic as well as the ‘City and Silent Film’.
