Oliver Stone‘s Oscar-festooned, moving and hard-hitting 1986 drama came close to being the first truly realistic film about the Vietnam War.

We go through the mud, blood, insects and atrocities with greenhorn recruit Charlie Sheen, who finds himself torn between the respective philosophies of two sergeants: a scarred redneck psychopath and a dope-smoking humanist. Although a few evasions creep in, the film deftly avoids most war movie clichés.
