Late former angry young man Alan Sillitoe’s adaptation of his own debut novel features an abrasive performance by the young Albert Finney as a Nottingham factory worker who refuses to let the bastards grind him down, though you may be forgiven for finding this 1960 drama rather dated and patronising today.

It’s back on screen to launch the Watershed’s epic Of Grudge and Gumption: British Working Class on Film Sunday brunch season.
