The Second Awakening of Christa Klages

Director
Margarethe von Trotta
Certificate
15
Running Time
93 mins

When the progressive nursery she opened three years earlier is threatened with closure due to lack of funds, Christa Klages (Tina Engel) teams up with her lover (Thomas Muller-Westernhagen) to rob a bank. They’re soon on the run, hotly pursued by the cops and, bizarrely, a young woman who was Christa’s hostage during the heist.

Margarethe von Trotta’s low-budget solo directorial debut from 1977 was not distributed overseas until her later works cemented her reputation, but boasts all of the director’s tradmark themes, including female bonding and the consequences of misguided acts. It’s back on screen in the Watershed’s The Personal is Political: The Films of Margarethe von Trotta season.
