Film

Sweet Smell of Success

Director
Alexander Mackendrick
Certificate
PG
Running Time
96 mins

Ealing director Alexander Mackendrick’s atypical Hollywood debut: a splendidly perverse film noir with Tony Curtis as a gossip hustling press agent under the thumb of a vicious Broadway newspaper columnist (Burt Lancaster). Its exploration of greed and ambition is just as relevant today as it was back then. In fact, the film was something of a flop on release, only subsequently being acclaimed as a classic.

It’s back on screen in  the ‘shed’s timely Manipulating the Message season as part of this year’s Cinema Rediscovered.
