The Beloved Rogue

Director
Alan Crosland
Running Time
94 mins

John Barrymore beat Douglas Fairbanks at his own game in this lavish silent swashbuckling spectacle from 1927, playing mediaeval French poet, thief and ladies’ man François Villon (an actual historical figure, fact fans), who falls afoul of dodgy King Louis XI (the great Conrad Veidt, whose credits ranged from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari to Casablanca). Marceline Day assumes swooning ’20s babe duties, and the terrific supporting cast of character actors includes Henry Victor and Angelo Rossitto, who would later pop up in Tod Browning’s Freaks.

This South West Silents screening features live piano accompaniment by Stephen Horne.
