The German Sisters

Director
Margarethe von Trotta
Certificate
TBA
Running Time
106 mins

Inspired by real-life sisters Christiane and Gudrun Enslin, Margarethe von Trotta‘s 1981 drama explores the realtionship between two contrasting siblings – a feminist journalist (Jutta Lampe) and a Baader Meinhof activist (Barbara Sukowa). They’re brought closer together after the latter is captured and goes on hunger strike.

As with The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum, terrorism itself is not the subject here; its personal ramifications and the legacy of Nazi Germany are what most concern the director. It’s back on screen as part of the Watershed’s The Personal is Political: The Films of Margarethe von Trotta season.
