Armando Iannucci gives the Dickens classic a zippy, visually imaginative and highly entertaining makeover with a career best performance from Dev Patel in the title role. Purists should be warned that Iannucci has no qualms about discarding whole strands of Dickens’ plot-heavy crowd-pleaser, which works impressively to the film’s advantage.
The colour-blind casting works well without ever jarring and there are terrific turns from Tilda Swinton as bonkers Aunt Betsey, Daisy May Cooper as Peggotty the nursemaid and Iannucci’s old chum Peter Capaldi as Mr. Micawber. This preview screening is in aid of Children in Need.
