The Report

The directorial debut of Steven Soderbergh’s frequent screenwriting collaborator Scott Z. Burns (The Informant!, Contagion, Side Effects), this Amazon Studios production is a political thriller that dramatises the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee’s 2014 probe into the CIA’s use of torture in the wake of 9/11.

Adam Driver plays idealistic young Senate staffer Daniel Jones, who’s charged with compiling the report under the protection of Senator Annette Bening. The film is hardly partisan, as neither the Bush nor the Obama administrations emerge smelling of roses. Indeed, the White House attempted to block and undermine Jones’s report, and no one was ever charged over those anodyne-sounding “enhanced interrogation techniques”. Of course, these days they could make it go away simply by reciting the magic words: ‘Fake News’.
