The Wife

Director
Björn Runge
Certificate

Running Time
100 mins

Swedish director Björn Runge‘s adaptation of Meg Wolitzer‘s 1992-set novel is a classy prestige drama with a terrific central performance by Glenn Close as the spouse of Great American Novelist Jonathan Pryce.

Hitched for forty years, the outwardly complementary couple are on their way to Stockholm, where he’s due to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. On the flight, they’re approached by journalist Christian Slater, who’s writing a profile of the great man and has uncovered his dark secret. In flashback, the seething resentment beneath the wife’s dutiful, devoted and selfless persona is laid bare.

The Watershed’s screening on March 16 includes an introduction by composer Jocelyn Pook, whose ensemble performs Music for Film and Voices at St. George’s later the same evening as part of Filmic 2019.
