War Is Hell

Director
Victor Trivas, George Shdanoff
Running Time
93 mins

Also known as Hell on Earth, Niemandsland and No Man’s Land, this rarely seen early sound movie from 1931 is an effective anti-war drama in which five soldiers of different nationalities (The Englishman, The Frenchman, The Russian Jew, The Vaudevillian and The German, as they’re described in the credits) find themselves trapped in no man’s land and decide to stick together.

Goebbels was especially displeased by the casting of a black actor as the American and tried to have all the prints destroyed. Fortunately he failed. The Cube’s screening is presented by the Bristol Remember the Real World War One Group and will be introduced by film historian Humberto Perez-Blanco.
