He doesn’t tour as much as his estranged former mucker Roger Waters, but when ex-Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour does play live, he tends to make quite a spectacle of it.
This 2016 show sees Gilmour and band return to the ancient Pompeii amphitheatre where Floyd filmed their classic Live at Pompeii audience-free concert performance back in 1971. This new film was shot in 4K by Gavin Elder and features a fair proportion of stuff from Gilmour’s last couple of solo albums, On an Island and Rattle That Lock. Floyd enthusiasts will also be delighted to learn that the set includes a rare live performance of The Great Gig in the Sky from Dark Side of the Moon, plus plenty of other timeless greats featuring Gilmour’s distinctive guitar tone: Money, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, the Floyd-go-metal of Run Like Hell and – woo-hoo! – Comfortably Numb. Since you’re here, let’s remind ourselves of how brilliant that 1971 performance was.
Following this cinema broadcast, Live at Pompeii will be released on blu ray/DVD/CD/vinyl/wax cylinder, etc., on September 29.
