Metropolitan Opera Live: Der Rosenkavalier

Certificate
12A
Running Time
287 mins

Muttony aristocrat the Marschallin (Renée Fleming) enjoys the attentions of her much younger lover Octavian (Elīna Garanča). Her vulgar cousin, Baron Ochs (Günther Groissböck), meanwhile, is eager to marry Sophie (Erin Morley) – the daughter of a wealthy bourgeois. The Marschallin offers to have Octavian act as Ochs’s Rosenkavalier – or ‘rose knight’ – to present the ceremonial silver engagement rose. But mutual lust erupts as soon as Octavian claps eyes upon Sophie.

Robert Carsen‘s new production of  Richard’s Strauss‘s hugely popular bittersweet romantic farce relocates the action to the end of the Habsburg empire, the better to underscore the opera’s subtext of class and conflict against a rich backdrop of gilt and red damask.
