Metropolitan Opera Live: Tosca

Certificate
12A
Running Time
198 mins

Rome during Napoleon’s invasion of Italy. After an escaped political prisoner scuttles into a church, an opera singer fights to save her artist lover from the sadistic police chief. Puccini‘s melodramatic opera of passion, jealousy, terror, torture and ropy plot contrivance gets a new production, courtesy of Sir David McVicar.

The Met’s production has had as tempestuous a time of it as poor old Tosca herself. First, star tenor Jonas Kaufmann pulled out. Then Kristine Opolais was replaced in the title role by Sonya Yoncheva. Finally, conductor and Met Opera Music Director James Levene was suspended after sexual assault allegations were made public. He’s been replaced by Dallas Opera music director Emmanuel Villaume.
