Teenager Manon is auctioned off to a rich, horny old goat by her ne’er-do-well brother, but she runs off with an impecunious young buck instead. However, when she tires of poverty, she’s tempted back by the lure of wealth and luxury. With music by Massenet, Kenneth MacMillan‘s acclaimed ballet draws upon Abbe Prevost’s novel and is set against the vivid backdrop of the seamy side of 18th century Paris.
It’s revived at Covent Garden as part of commemorations marking the 25th anniversary of anniversary of MacMillan’s death. You may wish to note that in keeping with the current fad for protecting sensitive souls with ‘trigger warnings’, the ROH has issued the following guidance: “Please note that Manon contains scenes of an adult nature, including sexual violence.”
