Court jester Rigoletto is kept by the rich, priapic Duke of Mantua and tries to protect his pure and innocent daughter Gilda from the attentions of this randy old goat. But to no avail. When the dastardly duke’s courtiers abduct the poor wench, our jesterly hero sets out to take revenge upon his employer.
Verdi’s tragic opera was dead controversial back in the mid-19th century, when it was considered poor form to have a pop at the toffs. After a tussle with the censor, Rigoletto was finally premiered in Venice and went on to become hugely popular around the world. David McVicar‘s colourful production was first staged in 2001 and is back on the main stage of the Royal Opera House conducted by Alexander Joel, with a cast led by Dimitri Platanias, Lucy Crowe and Michael Fabiano.
