Running Time
210 mins

Impecunious Gherman has the hots for lovely Liza, despite her inconvenient engagement to his chum Yeletsky. But our boy has a potential ace up his sleeve. He happens to know that Liza’s countess granny is in possession of the neat ‘secret of the three cards’ formula that could win him a shitload of loot. But when he tries to wrest the secret from her, she promptly dies of fright. Then she comes back to haunt him…

Tchaikovsky’s ambitious opera of love, obsession and – ulp! – the supernatural was based on a story by Pushkin.  Stefan Herheim‘s new production is set in 1890, the year of the opera’s premiere. Aleksandrs Antonenko and Eva-Maria Westbroek head the cast. The conductor is Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera.
