Royal Shakespeare Company Live: The Merry Wives of Windsor

Director
Fiona Laird
Certificate
12A
Running Time
210 mins

Finding himself a tad impecunious on arrival in Windsor, roguish fatty Falstaff (David Troughton) sets out to seduce a pair of wealthy married women: Mistress Page (Rebecca Lacey) and Mistress Ford (Beth Cordingly). The ladies quickly rumble the old fool because he’s sent them identical love letters. Having no interest in this rotund seducer, they turn the tables with a series of humiliating assignations.

Shakespeare’s only play about the middle classes, the bawdy Merry Wives of Windsor is a clear influence on many a modern sitcom. Fiona Laird‘s RSC debut is a modern production that whisks the action from posh Windsor to Essex. Estuary accents ahoy!
