Watch out, kids: that creepy supernatural childminder is back to rot your teeth with her spoons full of sugar. Nobody seems quite sure whether any records have been set, but 54 years is an awfully long time to wait for a sequel. Still, Disney are confident of the enduring appeal of P.L. Travers‘ character among the nanny-employing classes and may even be hoping for some grandparent-grandchild bonding in the multiplexes.
Emily Blunt gets to play the levitating sprog-wrangler in this sequel, which is set in 1930s London. Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer) are now adults, the former living with his three nippers and housekeeper (Julie Walters) when Poppins swoops back into his life. As if that wasn’t enough domestic help to satifsy even the Rees-Moggs of this world, she’s accompanied by Jack the street lamplighter (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and an eccentric cousin named Topsy (Meryl Streep). Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury and David Warner are among the familiar faces enjoying welcome pay cheques. And while Julie Andrews isn’t involved, gorblimey Dick Van Dyke is back to provide a link to the first film.
