Given that it reunited Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis with Tom Hanks (albeit only in voice form), it’s hardly surprising that there are moments in this festive animation that’ll have even the most charitable adult wondering just how much barf yer average popcorn bucket can safely hold.
The story of a bunch of juvenile sceptics whisked off to the North Pole on the eponymous steam train to have their doubts about Santa’s existence assuaged by the ‘real thing’, its clumsy moralising and painfully insistent claim that blind faith – Claus fundamentalism, if you will – is better than trusting to your senses or, in fact, logic is almost as nauseating as a city centre kebab after a skinful of lager.
This Bristol Film Festival screening takes place in the Passenger Shed, which will be converted into “the ultimate land of make-believe: a wintery Wonkyland” for the occasion. Go here for more information and tickets.
