This 1957 East German film became something of a cult in the UK back in the 1960s when the BBC chopped it up and broadcast it as a kids’ TV series with English language narration.

The Cube’s screening of this newly restored print offers a splendid nostalgia trip – and I use the word ‘trip’ advisedly – for those whose minds were damaged by the most surreal kids’ show ever broadcast in the UK. Millennials can only marvel at the powerful psychedelic drugs the creators must have been on as they enjoy the tale of the prince who turned into a bear, the princess who must learn to be less bad tempered, the huge fish stuck in ice, and the wicked dwarf. Back in 2004, readers of the Radio Times voted The Singing Ringing Tree the 20th spookiest TV show ever.
