The only film directed by Czech costume designer and screenwriter Ester Krumbachová, this 1970 comic fantasy centres on a nameless, lonely, fortysomething woman (Jirina Bohdalová) who gets a call from a man from her past named Bohouš Čert (Vladimír Mensík). Dreaming of marriage and domestic bliss, she invites him for dinner. But the chap that she remembers as a slim youth turns out to be a slobbish fatty with a yen for gluttony. To understand the title, it helps to know that ‘Čert’ translates as ‘devil’.
It’s on screen in the Gluttony, Decadence and Resistance strand of Cinema Rediscovered.
