Following the huge box office success of the 1942 Cat People, producer Val Lewton was cajoled by RKO into making a sequel. What he came up with was a very different film, inspired by a Robert Louis Stevenson short story, but the studio insisted that he retain their lurid title.
Set seven years after the first film, it’s the story of a lonely, introverted six-year-old girl who populates her vivid imagination with the ghost of her father’s deceased first wife (cursed panther-woman Simone Simon, repirising her role). As Time Out remarked: “Far from being a horror film, it’s a touching, perceptive and lyrical film about childhood, psychologically astute and occasionally disturning as it focuses entirely on the child’s-eye view of a sad, cruel world.”
