Cult Screens: The Shape of Water

Director
Guillermo del Toro
Certificate

Running Time
123 mins

2018’s big Oscar winner and Guillermo del Toro‘s finest film since the great Pan’s Labyrinth stars Brit Sally Hawkins as a mute cleaner who bonds with a Creature from the Black Lagoon-style amphibian humanoid during the 1960s Cold War.

Known as “the asset”, the beast was seized from a South American river by the US military in the hope that its secrets can give them an advantage over the dastardly Russkies. A distinctively weird and wonderful, superbly crafted fairytale, with a magnificently expressive, wordless performance by Hawkins, it’s also the most romantic human woman/aquatic critter love story you’ll ever see.
