Australian director Mirrah Foulkes‘ suitably quirky, whimsical and darkly comic feminist feature debut takes the enduring, domestic violence-themed children’s seaside entertainment as its starting point and imagines what might have happened if Judy (Mia Wasikowska) had declined to put up with the abuse meted out by Punch (Damon Herriman – Charles Manson in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).
In this origin story, binge-drinking Punch and talented Judy are puppeteers who live in the landlocked town of Seaside, whose idiot population are hugely entertained by violence – especially where women are the victims. Twists and turns best not disclosed here ensue, though traditionalists will be delighted to learn that the baby, the dog and the sausages are all present and correct.
