Summer Screens: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Director
Ol Parker
Certificate
PG
Running Time
114 mins

Here we go again indeed. The Abba jukebox musical romcom was such a hit back in 2008 (and still ranks as the eleventh highest grossing film of all time at the UK box office at the time of writing) that it’s no surprise to find most of the cast returning for another bumper payday. Bristol playwright Catherine Johnson, who originated the whole Mamma Mia! thing, gets a story credit, but the sequel is written and directed by Ol Parker (hubby of Thandie Newton and writer of both Best Exotic Marigold Hotels).

It’s ten years on. Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is up the duff and now begins to learn more about her mum (Meryl Streep) and three dads (Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård) through the medium of flashbacks with younger actors. Oh, and Cher pops up as granny. Expect loads more Abba songs, both leftover and recycled, in what is sure to be another hit of the critic-proof variety (The Guardian‘s reviewer called the first one a “soulless panto” and said it made him want to vomit).

This Summer Screens screening takes place in Bristol Zoo Gardens. Doors open at 6:30pm and the film is on screen at 8:15pm. Go here for tickets.
