Busy Amy Adams stars in this cerebral, Oscar-winning Interstellar-style science fiction drama from Sicario director Denis Villeneuve. Adapted from Ted Chiang‘s award-winning novella Story of Your Life, it explores what would actually happen if space aliens turned up.

When spacecraft land at 12 apparently random locations across the globe (including, erm, Devon), the first challenge is to find out whether their occupants plan to eat us or offer the tentacle of friendship. Linguist Adams is among the team recruited by US Army Colonel Forest Whitaker – yep, it’s always the Americans who take charge – alongside military boffin Jeremy Renner. Trouble is that the mere presence on terra firma of our mysterious chums from beyond the stars prompts immediate unrest and reignites superpower tensions.

It’s back on screen to conclude the ‘shed’s April The Sound of Sci-Fi Sunday brunch season, which is in turn part of Filmic 2018, to highlight the late Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson‘s suitably otherworldly score.
