He had a miserable time with Danny Boyle’s rotten adaptation of his novel The Beach, but Alex Garland‘s film career has gone from strength to strength since then, with writing credits for 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Dredd. Working from his own script, he plonked himself in the director’s chair for the first time for this intriguing science fiction thriller. Domhnall Gleeson plays a talented young coder who’s recruited by his manipulative internet billionaire boss Oscar Isaac to conduct a Turing test on an artificial intelligence he’s bunged in the body of a sexy lady robot (Alicia Vikander) in his mountain lair. Turing test? That’s the experiment devised by Benedict Cumb…, er, Alan Turing to determine whether an AI can pass itself off successfully as being human.
The score is by Ben Salisbury and Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, who previously collaborated on Dredd. They’ll both be present at this Filmic 2018 event to introduce a full screening of the film with a discussion about the creation of their suitably eerie music.
