A quartet of Atlanta businessmen (Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, Ronny Cox) embark on a manly outdoor adventure in the Appalachian wilderness that will lead to the duelling of banjos and very sore bottoms indeed. John Boorman’s landmark 1972 film bequeathed us the useful phrase ‘Deliverance Country’, which remains apt shorthand for parts of rural Gloucestershire.
Portable Pictures’ outdoor screening takes place, appropriately enough, at Beese’s Tea Gardens on the riverbank in the wilds of rural, er, Bristol, though re-enactment of Mr. Beatty’s unwanted sexual experience is presumably discouraged. Your ticket price includes a hog roast or, for those who prefer not to chow down on our porcine friends, halloumi kebabs, both served with salad, roast potatoes and stuffing. There will also be free popcorn available. Food will be served from 7pm, the film starts at 8pm and the bar will be open until 11pm. Advance tickets, price £20, are available here. Should you wish to add to the authentic Deliverance experience, you can also arrive by boat. Bristol Ferry are putting on a special service for the screening, departing from Castle Park at 6pm. This is a one-way trip so you will need to get back either by bus or taxi. Note that the ferry ride is not included as part of the ticket price you will need to book this separately in advance here. The ferry costs £12 per person.
