Bristol Women in Music movement launches

By Laura Williams  Tuesday May 19, 2015

Just weeks after bucking the national trend by returning four female MPs in the election, Bristol continues to fight the good fight with the launch of a new Bristol Women in Music collective.

Coinciding with a Bristol Festival of Ideas talk from singer Tracy Thorn at St George’s on May 22, the new group will be taking over the Crypt at the former church for an evening of live music and spoken word.

The Bristol Women in Music launch event starts at 9pm, after Thorn’s talk, and is open to everyone from artists and bands to promoters, writers and members of the public. It’s free entry.

Performances throughout the evening will come from some of Bristol’s finest female musicians including Australian-born and now Bristol based Nuala Honan, the fresh vocals of Naomi Jeremy, budding singer-songwriter Evie Woods, and rounding off the night will be live poetry from Nadine Bourne.

Thorn’s talk – which is ticketed – will feature excerpts from her book, Naked at the Albert Hall: The Inside Story of Singing, which is a follow up to her autobiography Bedsit Disco Queen. The Everything But The Girl Singer will be looking back over three decades in the music industry.

Annie McIntyre, one of the women behind the new organisation, said: “Bristol Women in Music is an ever growing network encouraging others to engage in new experiences and challenge themselves within their musical careers. Join us as we embark on starting a conversation about the roles, issues, and successes of women within the music industry.”

“For years the music industry has been dominated by men,” added Thorn. “It’s important that women are represented in every industry at every level and that the gender pay gap is addressed. I fully support this group and am sure that music in Bristol will thrive as the members of Bristol Women In Music support, challenge and inspire each other.”

Tickets for the Tracy Thorn talk beforehand, priced £8, are available here, and Bristol Women in Music can offer an exclusive discount by using the promotional code “BMIW” at checkout.
