Behind the scenes at Guilbert’s

By Bristol24/7  Thursday Mar 26, 2015

Guilbert’s is the only remaining chocolate maker in the centre of Bristol – the city in which the chocolate bar was invented.

Piers Guilbert opened his first chocolate shop and factory at 40 Park Street 100 years ago. This site was bombed during World War Two and in 1958 Guilbert’s moved to Leonard Lane.

Their home for the last few years has been in nearby Small Street in the former home of the 15th Century merchant John Foster. It’s believed to be the oldest Bristol building still in commercial use.

Guilbert’s still makes all their chocolates and confectionery by traditional methods. Photographer Sarah McDowall took a look behind the scenes:

Guilbert’s are one of the exhibitors at the Taste Chocolate festival, taking place at Brunel Square next to the ss Great Britain on April 4 and 5. For more information, visit www.tastechocolate.co.uk.
